Overlay Mudhead Kachina Pin

This Hopi-made overlay Mudhead Kachina pin is handcrafted from sterling silver using traditional Hopi overlay techniques. The figure features a hand-cut silhouetted design with oxidized recessed details that create contrast against the satin-finished silver surface. The elongated form gives the pin strong movement and presence while remaining lightweight and wearable.

Measures approximately 3" tall x 1 3/8" wide at its widest point.

The Mudhead Kachina design in the recessed area was created using the Hopi Overlay technique, where a top layer with a cut-out design is soldered to a solid base plate. Before the bottom silver plate is joined, a meticulous technique called "matting" is used to create tiny, intentional indentations (seen as tiny etches), catching light from within the oxidized recess to add depth to the design.
