Overlay Style Kokopeli Kachina Brooch

A great example Hopi artistry! This brooch/pin accessory was handcrafted by a Hopi artisan using the traditional Hopi overlay technique. This entails a cut out design being constructed from solid sterling silver plate before being soldered to a second plate on which a meticulous technique called "matting" has been used to create tiny, intentional indentations (seen as tiny etches), catching light from within the recess and adding depth to the design. The top plate is then soldered to the matted piece. This particular brooch has a slightly curved sterling backing plate, making it easy to wear on a shirt or garment. Tiny vertical matting lines give this traditional ceremonial figure the appearance of movement.
