About Max Early
Max Early, born in 1963, is a distinguished artisan from the Laguna Pueblo. His mother belongs to the Turkey Clan, and his father is from the Bear Clan. Max married into the Cochiti Pueblo and has three children. His early years were shaped by his grandparents, where his interest in tradition began to flourish.
Max assisted his grandmother, Clara Acoya Encino, in painting pottery when she could no longer do it herself due to arthritis. Although he was not encouraged to work with clay, this experience sparked a dormant passion for pottery that re-emerged after nearly a decade.
After attending college, Max began painting ceramic ware as a hobby but found commercial pieces uninspiring. Determined to create something meaningful, he decided to gather raw materials and make a large olla. He sought guidance from fellow potter Gladys Paquin, who taught him how to fire pottery.
The success of his first olla confirmed his destiny as an artisan. Max now focuses on preserving the traditional pottery-making techniques of his Pueblo, aiming to pass these skills on to future generations.
