Navajo handcrafted sun pendant by artist Marty Yazzie. The pendant has a unique pattern that fills the center of the sun. It features a geometric shapes of black jet and white buffalo stone. The bail of the pendant is also inlayed with a single piece of black jet. Nicely detailed and easy to wear.
Measurements: 2" in length with a 1-1/2" of width. The Bail is large enough to accommodate up to a 7mm bead or necklace. With the bail the pendant has a total length of 2"
Stone: The White Buffalo stone originates from the Tonopah Nevada area found in the same general veins as Dry Creek turquoise but has no copper content. Considering this fact, it should therefore NOT be called “white, turquoise” as it does not have the same chemical composition as turquoise, which is a copper phosphate. There is no copper to cause blue color or iron to cause green color. It is a mostly clean white calcite/quartz mix with black chert inclusions (matrix) that are more sharply defined as opposed to being smutty. The better stones have clear delineations of black and white.
Fossilzed wood: Jet (black elements) is a product of high-pressure decomposition of wood from millions of years ago, commonly the wood of trees. Native American Navajo and Pueblo tribes of New Mexico were using regionally mined jet for jewelry and the ornamentation of weapons when early Spanish explorers reached the area in the 1500’s.Today these jet deposits are known as Acoma jet, for the Acoma Pueblo.
