About Marcella Yepa
Born into the Jemez Pueblo in 1964 and a proud member of the Sun Clan, Marcella Yepa discovered her passion for pottery at age 19. Guided by her aunt, Alvina Yepa, she learned the traditional art of hand coiling, essential for crafting authentic Native American pottery. Marcella was also taught how to find the best clays and master specific techniques needed to bring her artistic visions to life.
Her early realization of pottery's lucrative potential inspired her to pursue a career in this art form, helping her establish a distinctive style that has not only defined her career but also reinforced her sense of self-worth. Marcella's family ties to the art world include her relative, fellow artist Emma Yepa, highlighting a family legacy rich in artistic talent.
The Artistry behind Marcella Yepa’s Collection
Marcella Yepa is part of a long tradition of handmade pottery. She creates designs that have been passed on through Jemez’s generations. She learned the traditional ways of hand coiling, stone polishing, and firing from her family. She uses her skills to work with clay, seeing each piece as a way to create something unique and beautiful. Her specialty is the hand-coiled contemporary swirl and melon style. She uses clay and natural pigments from the Jemez Pueblo.
Marcella begins her craft by soaking the clay, and then grinding it into a fine powder. She meticulously cleans and hand-mixes the clay before hand-coiling and shaping it into various forms. Using a stone, she carefully carves and polishes each piece before firing it with cedar chips. Her collection includes a wide range of pottery, from ollas to wedding vases, showcasing numerous traditional shapes in different sizes.
